MAC Pro - Agency Talk 3/27/09

On March 27th I attended a "Master Class" best described as a Panel Discussion.
The class description was as follows:
The gate keepers share their thoughts on the industry and becoming a working artist. Listen to an Agent, Creative Director, Publicist and Editor discuss their roles in the industry and what they look for when booking artists and reviewing portfolios.

The panel included Judy Casey and Joan Zingarelli of Judy Casey Inc. Judy Casey Inc is an agency representing a diverse group of photographers, stylist, hair and makeup artists.
Also on the panel was Richard Ferretti, Creative Director for Gourmet Magazine and Cari Ross, publicist to the stars.

Here are some of general notes that a took down during the discussion:
Be Professional - Across the board, they couldnt have stressed this more.
Maintain Relationships/Network - Keep in contact with all contacts you make (old and new).
Team Player - Dont just go to a shoot a do makeup... become involved, communicate and ask questions. Work together with everyone involved (ex: photographer, stylist, director).
Be Expansive/Flexible - Be open-minded and willing to try new things.
Be Open to Creative Input & Critique - take criticism as positive as possible.
Be Personable - Easy to communicate and work with
Don't Rely on Retouching - You want your work to look as amazing before as it does after. Photographer shouldn't need to retouch makeup.

Avg portfolio size is 11x14
Have atleast 10 GREAT Images in your book
Keep your book clean and sleek
Make the images flow - Series of images that "tell a story"
Set realistic goals
Assist Professional Makeup Artists
Ask Advice
Be on the look out for up and coming talent to work with.
Request untouched photos along with the touched images. This way you can self evaluate your own work and improve in areas which need improvement.
Focus on clean and beautiful makeup.
Find a hair stylist to work with.
Understand lighting.

Follow up to the Stipple technique

Yesterday, I posted a topic on getting a flawless face with a J-Lo glow, using the Stipple technique. This look can be achieved with any foundation. It doesnt have to be the MAC Hyper Real foundation. You can use any foundation but the Brush is "KEY" to getting the look. Whether its the MAC 188 or the 187.

= A FLAWLESS w/ a J-Lo Glow

Today, I decided to try something different from my everyday routine ... MAC Studio Fix Fluid.

So I grabbed my MAC Hyper Real Foundation in NC400 and my 188 Brush (the baby brother of the 187). I began with a moisturized face. Today I used Cetaphil Moisturizer Lotion and let in sit on my face about 15 min before I applied the makeup.

I poured about a nickle size of foundation on to the back of my hand. I took the 188 brush and dabbed it into the foundation just getting enough makeup on to the tips of the brush. Make sure not to pick up too much product on your brush.

I used the stippling technique to apply my foundation all over my face. And what a result! It gave me great coverage with a flawless finish.

Now when you use the stipple technique, all you have to do is just dab dab dab all over your face. I may just have to do a video tutorial on this. The main idea is just to stipple only all over and do not swirl.

I hope this make sense. LOL!!

January 20th Get Free Cosmetics at Major Department Stores ... Yes I said FREE!!!

Starting next week, several big retailers will giveaway $175 million worth of free high-end cosmetics including such brands as Estee Lauder and L'Oreal to consumers as part of a class-action settlement alleging that the stores planned to fix prices.

Department stores such as Macy's and Nordstrom will distribute free cosmetics as long as supplies last to shoppers who bought certain cosmetics between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003 to settle claims that the stores violated antitrust laws and tried to fix prices.

The offer is part of an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed in 2003 in a California federal court. The suit alleges stores tried to limit sales and scale back on the amount of cosmetics in their inventory, thereby keeping both prices and competition high.

The department stores involved in the matter have denied any wrongdoing.

The products will be available starting Jan. 20. Shoppers are only permitted to receive one product made by cosmetic companies that include Chanel, Estee Lauder and L'Oreal USA, among others.

Stores participating in the settlement include: Bergdorf Goodman, Bergner's, Bloomingdale's, Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Dillard's, Gottschalks, Herberger's, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Parisian, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Younkers.

R.I.P Makeup Artist: Todd Homme

1985 - 2008
May he rest in eternal peace.

Finalist of the Makeup Reality TV Show "Blush", Todd Homme passed away in his sleep Saturday, December 13th. The cause of death is unknown but is rumored to be due to a heart condition. Todd was only 23 years old.

I became a fan of Todd while watching "Blush". He was a true inspiration. His love and passion for Makeup shined through his work. Todd came across as a genuinely good-hearted person and an extraordinary human being. The judges on the show always spoke highly of him. They said things like ... "he has so much joy, you see it in his face when he works" "he lives for it."

Even while watching the finale show Tuesday evening, I was not aware of his passing

It wasn't until Wednesday morning, while at work a co-worker mentioned ... "hey, did you hear one of the guys from Blush passed away?" Immediatedly I turned to Google to see what I could find. My heart dropped to the floor when I found out it was Todd. I read an article on Newsday.com which confirmed his death. Todd was my favorite on the show, along with Nolan. Together they made an excellent team.

I did not know Todd Homme on a personal level but can honestly say I was touched by his personality and inspired by his passion of Makeup.

I would like to extend my condolences to Todd Homme's loved ones. My prayers are with his Fiance, Mother, Nolan, and his family during this very difficult time.

Interview with Jeanne Van Phue, MAC’s Makeup Department Head for Twilight

Q: What was the process for creating the various characters’ looks?
A: Katherine Hardwicke, the director, and I have previously worked together on a movie called Lords of Dogtown, so we know each other very well. I began by preparing sketches of my vision, keeping in mind the descriptions Stephanie Myers (Twilight’s Author) set forth in the books.

Bella’s (Kristen Stewart’s character) description in the novel is very pale and extremely beautiful with large chocolate brown eyes, so she wore colored lenses every day. I also pictured her as a natural beauty, which is exactly what Kristen is. I used a light hand while applying all neutral colors to make her look as though she had no makeup on.

Edward’s (Robert Pattinson’s character) description in the novel is impossibly handsome almost god-like. His skin is marble-pale, hard as stone and ice cold, but perfect and flawless. Edwards’ eyes are described as topaz colored when he is normal and black like onyx, when hungry.

Q: Were there any changes to the looks of the characters that weren’t planned?
A: At the beginning, Katherine Hardwicke visualized Edward with long hair, yet after studying his face and jaw line in the makeup test, the decision was made to go with short hair to accentuate his amazing jaw line.

Q: What was the overall look of the makeup in this movie?
A: All the vampires had to be pale, but I didn’t want them to look to ghoulish, somewhere between Sweeney Todd and Interview with the Vampire. The choice was made for a denser, more opaque look for the supporting vampires and a lighter look for the leading man.

The challenge was they still had to look beautiful and handsome. The key was striking the delicate shading balance. We had two weeks of makeup test. This is the time for a makeup artist to unleash their imagination.

During the testing Katherine let me know when I was on the mark. Katherine has a fabulous eye for detail and everything I did had to be approved by her.

Q: Were there any other challenges you encountered while working on location in Portland, Oregon?
A: The rain was a huge challenge. We were outside, and it rained the entire time we were there. Most of the shots were exterior; trying to fix makeup in the rain with wet faces and wet brushes was difficult. In the end, I must say I loved working on this movie, it challenge my creativity as never before. The cast was such a great group of talented young actors.

Q: What were your non-makeup related responsibilities in terms of creating this look?

Q: What M·A·C products did you use on the film Twilight?
A: The M.A.C products I used on this film were eye shadows and powder for our principles. We had several other characters and day players I used M.A.C. foundations, lipsticks and blushes.

Q: How long have you used M·A·C products?
A: In 30 years as a makeup artist in my career and over 50 movies, M·A·C products have played an integral part in my work. I have probably used all of them at one time or another. I choose the cosmetics based on their skin tone and whether they are oily or dry. It also depends on how the product reacts to their particular skin type.

Lifetime is putting its best face on for a potential companion series to its soon-to-be-acquired Project Runway. The reality show called "Blush: The Search for America's Greatest Makeup Artist" will be produced by IMG Entertinment.
"Blush" will follow eight aspiring makeup mavens as they compete for the grand prize of a one-year contract as a professional makeup artist with Max Factor, $100,000 in cash and a shot at doing the makeup for a major glossy magazine cover shoot. Contestants will live together in Los Angeles and engage in weekly elimination competitions.

Review:

This is a must have item!!! I've been using this sponge for about a week now. I love how it effortlessly blends foundation on to the skin, leaving a flawless finish. The price, $9.99 is a bit expensive for a sponge but very reasonable compared to its competitor, The Beauty Blender, priced at 19.95.

Prior to using the sponge for the first time, I rinsed the sponge out with water a few times. Before application of foundation, I soak the sponge in water or spray some MAC Fix+. This helps to keep the sponge from absorbing too much product. I personally like to pour a small amount of foundation on to the back of my left hand, then dab my wet sponge into the foundation about 2-3 times. Once I have product on the sponge, I stipple it onto the face going back for more foundation as necessary. I plan on doing a video tutorial on this product, so stay tuned for that. =)

I use my MAC Brush Cleanser to clean my sponge, I found it to be most effective. This helps to remove all the product absorbed inside the sponge. You can also use warm water and mild anti-bacterial soap.

Here goes.... this is my first official post to my beauty blog. Yayyy!!!
Im new to all this blogging stuff....but im sure i'll get into the swing of things pretty quickly.

I love anything to do with makeup. I love talking about it, applying it, and experimenting with it.

I am a currently a big fan of MAC and Makeup Forever but I do like other cosmetic lines such as Stila, Nars, Benefit, Christian Dior, Urban Decay, Lorac, Smashbox and the list goes on.

My plans for this blog is to do product reviews, looks from new collections, and make-up tutorials.

I hope to hear from other beauty/makeup enthusiasts. Please feel free to share your views, comments, questions, and requests.
